Kane didn't set out to start a drinks brand.
He set out to find a drink he actually wanted.
After nearly a decade working as a barista, chef and hospitality consultant — pouring some of the best coffee in the world, building menus, running kitchens — he kept arriving at the same quiet frustration. He could find extraordinary food. He could find extraordinary coffee. But he couldn't find a canned drink he genuinely trusted. Something he could have every day, that would actually help him, made from real ingredients, with no crash, no addictive hook, and nothing hiding in the small print.
So he started making one.
Five years of trying
That was over five years ago.
What followed wasn't a clean origin story. It was years of experimenting — getting the balance wrong, starting again, learning what it actually means to make a drink that's holistic in the real sense of the word rather than the marketing version. Testing hundreds of ingredient combinations. Understanding what each botanical actually does and why it earns its place, not just what it looks like on a label.
Soft drinks and juice have been a part of Kane's life longer than almost anything else. The frustration wasn't with the category — it was with what the category had become. Brands pushing one or two headline ingredients while quietly filling the rest of the can with concentrates, flavour extracts and vague "natural flavourings" that tell you nothing about what you're actually drinking. Products built to sell, not to work.
The drink he was looking for existed in theory. It just hadn't been made yet.
The name that was almost his
Before Kane was born, his parents had already chosen his name: Sol — for the sun.
Then he arrived, and they changed their minds.
The name stayed with him anyway. And when it came time to name the first SPOT drink, it was always going to be Sol Maté. Part soul mate — something you reach for because it's right, not because you're dependent on it. Part sun — because everything in the can is grown by it, under it, and should make you feel like it's out.
That's not a coincidence. It's the whole point.
What SPOT means
SPOT came from a street food market café. The idea that the best version of any experience — food, drink, a place, a moment — hits a very specific spot. You know when something does it and you know when something doesn't.
Kane wanted to build a brand that always did. Not just Sol Maté. Everything SPOT makes should feel like you're in the right place, doing the right thing, and it's worth it.
That's a high bar. It's meant to be.
Greenock
SPOT Drinks is built in Greenock, on the west coast of Scotland, at the Baker Street Food & Drink Hub.
Getting here took time. For years, Kane looked for the right space to scale properly — somewhere that would let him run the process the way it needs to be run, not cut corners to fit a smaller setup. Two things made it possible: winning the Open University's OEM microfinancing competition while starting his Open Degree, and an Inverclyde start-up grant that gave the business its first real footing.
Inverclyde isn't the obvious place to launch a functional beverage brand. That's partly why it matters. Real things tend to get built in places with something to prove.
No shortcuts, no small print
The thing that drives everything SPOT makes is straightforward.
If you're genuinely making a good product — with real processes, real ingredients, and real care — you don't need to hide anything. You don't need to lean on one hero ingredient and hope nobody reads the rest of the label. You don't need to shelter behind regulatory loopholes that let you call something "natural" when it's a derivative of a natural ingredient processed beyond recognition.
Kane publishes the full ingredient list, the suppliers, the sourcing. The recipe isn't a secret. The process isn't a secret. Because the argument isn't that nobody else could make Sol Maté — it's that even with the exact recipe, nobody else would make it the same way.
The ingredients are supposed to sing together. Not one of them carries the can. All of them earn their place.
That's what we mean by integrity. And it's the only thing SPOT is built on.
